New Interface 'Weighs Up' for Heil
Heil Europe have introduced a CAN system which acts as an interface between the onboard weighing facility supplied with a Mercedes Econic chassis and a Heil refuse body.
Heil, who are the World's Leading refuse collection vehicle manufacturer, have worked with IFM Electronic and Mercedes to develop this interface using the SAEJ1939 protocol. This has provided many exciting new features and benefits compared to a typical on-board weighing system.
This is the first time such a system has been used on a Heil refuse collection body with all weighing information visible on a text display inside the vehicle cab - allowing greater accuracy and a programmable overload protection signal which is of particular benefit to the operator.
David MacDonald, European Service Coordinator for Heil Europe, developed and tested the system. David comments; "Not only is this new system much more cost effective than a standard onboard weighing system, there is no requirement for longmember modifications to accommodate the traditional load cell. This not only reduces overall height, but also lowers centre of gravity thus increasing the stability of the vehicle. No chassis modifications are required and there is no weight penalty as sensors are already present".
In case of an emergency, pin-codes have been created to allow override of the overload. These pin-codes are entered via the text display inside the vehicle cab, all of which can be re-set for maximum security.
This new system also allows other critical chassis information to be read, such as vehicle speed. The system can be retrofitted to any Heil body mounted on a Mercedes chassis that is capable of supporting the SAEJ1939 interface. This exciting development is another example of Heil's continual commitment to offer cost effective ownership of their refuse equipment.
